The gut diaries

I’ve had issues with my general health for the past year or so. I have battled the constant feelings of ‘unwell’ or ‘not quite right’ chalking it up to a busy schedule and not enough vitamins. Lo and behold, after many blood tests, other tests I won’t disclose here and like, a shit ton of money looks like I had parasites and deveopled leaky gut syndrome.

I mean, after being diagnosed with Hypermobility Joint Syndrome and being told I could develop Fibromyalgia gut issues were a welcome distraction. Chronic pain issues can’t always be cured as such, they can only be managed. Gut bacteria, leaky gut and gut parasites can be treated which is positive news.  Positive and expensive news. I won’t lie, my last doctors visit cost me $680 which covered the consult session plus the antibiotics and probiotics amongst other various herbs needed to balance my gut. Wow, did that sting or what?! As well as the expensive tablets I also needed to drastically shift my diet to limit my grain and sugar intake. I’m already gluten and dairy free so that was no biggie but sugar and GF pasta?!

RICE!!

I CANNOT EAT TOO MUCH RICE!!

I FRIKKEN LOVE RICE I EAT IT FOR BREAKFAST!!

AND NO FRUIT. OH, EXCEPT BLUEBERRIES. BUT NO FRUIT AT ALL!!!!

Man, I miss rice…

Ok, ok I’ve calmed down. Moving on. I had cut out most preservatives and refined sugars in my 10 tablets a day kill the parasites protocol but happily jumped back on them after that was done. Cutting fruit and grains for 3 months is hard guys, it’s really hard and let me tell you something – I’m feeling pretty effing hangry. I’m sick of eating the same foods over and over again and dreaming about chocolate. However, I must say that I am starting to feel a whole heap better. I’m still experiencing days of extreme fatigue and body pains but it is lessening which is sort of nice.

I’ve had to be creative with my foods and take a lot of time and care into planning and cooking. I’m in love with my slow cooker right now. It is the absolute best to make fresh chicken soups using no store bought stock and not having to sit around and wait for it to cook for hours and hours. The oven is my other best friend for roasting veggies and chicken. Look I’m getting a little sick of sweet potato I’ll be honest but what choice do I have? Oh, I’m also spending a good $10 a week on blueberries which is sort of painful but necessary to kill sugar cravings. At least I can still drink coffee. Black coffee with Stevia but still, coffee. I also really enjoy when people offer me sugary goodness and I have to politely decline. Conversations go something like this –

 

A person holds chocolate cake to my face…

person: have a slice!

me: oh, no thank you I’m gluten-free.

person: I have gluten free sweets!

me: oh thanks, I’m not having sugar either.

person: WHAT?! BUT YOU’RE SO SKINNY WHY ARE YOU ON A DIET?

me: *sigh* gee, thanks, i’m actually trying to rebalance my gut so cannot have sugar right now due to one of the bacterias in my gut having a complete sugar overload…

person: oh…

me: but thanks for pointing out how skinny I am, I had no idea.

 

Well anyway, consider this my introductory post on the new section of my blog – The Gut Diaries. I’ll be oversharing this journey back to a healthier me which includes progress, food and also exercise. I’ve had to join the gym again (the horror) to strengthen my overly mobile joints. Did I mention I have chronic scar tissue in my left ankle which is really effing painful? I thought I had a stress fracture!
